Cakes, Birthdays, and Sleepovers
The Setting
This weekend is Michaela’s birthday (on Sunday). So, of course we went as all-out as we could for her.
She had two friends (Jeff and Tim) from Wales come in on Friday, and since we had to house them somehow, I temporarily moved out of my room and have been having a sleepover with our friend Claire.
Saturday – Sunrise Hiking hehe
I then convinced everyone on Saturday morning to do a sunrise hike and consequently wake up at 6:30 am (I don’t know why they don’t hate me by now). Turns out it was rainy and cloudy and you couldn’t see he sunrise and yet we still did the hike!
Then Claire and I went to Flo’s place to bake Michalea’s favorite cake: Angel food cake. (Why couldn’t it have been something simple like chocolate cake???). Turns out when you are a poor college student and you have no kitchen equipment, this leads to you needing to HAND WHIP THE EGGS. For those of you interested, this took almost an hour and a million sore arms to do, and some spills happened along the way😂
Oh, we also made buttercream frosting for the cake, but because we were afraid it was too sweet we decided to mix it with whip cream. After COATING the entire cake with our whip/butter cream creation, we remembered that Michaela is in fact lactose intolerant… she cannot eat whip cream. Honestly by this point we had been awake for 6 hours and 4 of those hours had been spent on this cake and we were so done we just said screw it she can scrape the frosting off the cake. Pretty much after that the only thing I had time to do was run home, eat real food, then head to my hockey match.
Hockey Match Summary
Unfortunately we lost the match 0-1. My team was a bit frantic and the result was that we were constantly on our heals the entire first half and gave up 5 short corners, one of which resulted in the goal. Second half we were much more composed and even got a couple of our own shots off but to no avail.
Birthday Dinner
After the match I ran back and got ready and went and met everyone at dinner where about 16 friends had all gone out for Michaela’s birthday. I tried a new drink called a Black Russian (surprisingly very tasty) and ate Haggis because when in Scotland… (btw I actually love haggis). Following this, half the group went back early to decorate one of our common rooms while the other half distracted Michaela for 30 min by telling her we have to go to the store to buy her lactose free ice cream. Then we all went back and surprised her with our beautiful (but to her inedible) cake, and a room filled with signs, homemade bday hats, and balloons.
We spent the rest of the night hanging out and enjoying each other’s company before everyone crashed around midnight since we are old souls and could not rally to make it out to a bar. Therefore: it was a great night 😊
