Bavarian Food and German Castles
Day eins (1) of my week-long trip to Germany
For those who do not know, I have a friend, Dario, who lives in Frankfurt, Germany. I figured while I am studying abroad, I should go to Oktoberfest (since I will probably never get another chance to do it in Germany), so I contacted him and he said he would be happy to host me. However, instead of going to the main Oktoberfest in Munich, we bought tickets for a more local Oktoberfest called Wasen (where we get 4 liters of beer and half a chicken with our ticket!) Well after looking at flights and my class schedule, I realized I could fit in an entire week of travel. I did not really know what I was getting myself into other than that I was going to an Oktoberfest on Oct 2nd. But the rest of the days were planned out by Dario.
I left Edinburgh on the 27th and on the morning of the 28th Dario surprised me by telling me we were going to Bavaria. We drove there that morning and first had a traditional Bavarian breakfast of white beer, sausage, and a pretzel.
Then Dario took me to castle Neuschwanstein (built by Ludwig II), which inspired the Disney Castle used in the opening scenes of all the Disney movies (this still has yet to be confirmed by me+google). I’ll keep everyone updated with the adventures I am having here. All I know is that we will be visiting Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland (three more countries than I was expecting to go to). Below are some photos of my first day on the trip.
BTW DARIO keeps making me wake up at 6:30 AM and this was supposed to be my vacation; he must take joy in torturing me.
To read more about my travels through Germany (and austria+!), check out my day zwei (2) post.
*Fun fact: Austria has an unbelievable amount of tunnels. For those who, like me, hold their breath every time they go through a tunnel, this place is torture.
By the way it has come to my attention that my friends back in Edinburgh cannot manage without me. I was gone for less than 24 hours before my friend Adam stabbed his foot on a metal fence and rendered himself a cripple. He now has to be carried around by others.
